OPT-X HDX and FibrePlus panels were used to simplify the network installation while allowing for easy migration and simplified network management.
The Challenge
The National Institute for Nuclear Physics (NINP) is an Italian research agency dedicated to the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and the laws that govern them. The NINP was building a new data center in Bologna, Italy, that would house the European supercomputer known as Leonardo; one of eight preexascale supercomputers that form the European high-performance computing network EuroHPC, and one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world. To support both the new data center and the operations of the supercomputer, the client needed a partner that could provide an extensive plan and range of products, including the capability to specify details like a fiber connector that could change polarity and gender.
The NINP approached Leviton to provide the infrastructure for this facility, as they needed both fiber and copper connectivity installed throughout and they knew Leviton is a world class provider of both.
The Solution
Per customer request, Leviton’s solution needed to include fiber optic OM5 and OS2 cabling, as well as copper Cat 6A U/UTP cabling. Leviton experts proposed a solution that included the required components as well as OPT-X™ HDX High-Density Panels, the EMEA-only FibrePlus panel system, and high-density copper patch panels.
Leviton provided 192 OM5 arrays and 192 OS2 arrays at various lengths, with MTP® PRO connectors. These connectors would allow for shifts in polarity and gender, reducing the complexity of the client’s fiber network and ensuring consistent polarity.
Leviton experts designed all cabinets involved (around 40 racks) and had a hands-on role in the network’s design.
The Impact
The NINP appreciated Leviton Network Solutions’ capacity as a single-source manufacturer, as we supplied a comprehensive end-to-end solution that met all their requirements. The European supercomputer Leonardo was installed at Bologna Technology Park, and the new data center’s inauguration, presided over by Republic President Sergio Mattarella, took place on November 24, 2022. As of today, the NINP’s data center is hard at work, empowered by Leviton connectivity facilitating the organizations’ efforts to push mankind forward.
